LOWCOUNTRY EDITION

Tucked away in a quaint renovated home in the Old Village on Pitt Street, you will find Biokare Health and Wellness Center. The charm on the outside reminds us of simpler times, but inside is a state-of-the art facility.

A general recommendation when selecting a practitioner is to get a feel for their practice by observing the interactions in the reception room. You can learn a lot while you wait. Biokare has a family feel as soon as you walk in the door. Denise Ross-Hiott greets everyone who enters and has an easy rapport with the patients. It is obvious she knows a lot about their lives and families and that she genuinely cares about them. Patients exchange stories on how much better they feel since they started coming here.

The family feel is there for a reason. Ross-Hiott is the office manager and sister of Doctor of Chiropractic Jesse Ross. They have been working together in the Charleston area for 23 years, the last three in their Pitt Street location. She has an obvious pride and affection for her brother, and it is clear he feels the same about her.

Family is the foundation of Biokare, and family is what originally inspired Ross to pursue his mission in health care. He speaks admiringly of his father, an intelligent and hard-working man who was told he had six months to live when he was diagnosed with a heart condition in his 50s. His own father had died around that age. Ross’ father chose not to believe the prognosis and took matters into his own hands. He changed his diet, began exercising, and started seeing a chiropractor. He lived 18 years past that six-month prognosis. Ross’ “Eat well, think well, move well” philosophy mirrors his father’s approach.

Ross offers a free consultation followed by a comprehensive assessment to get to the root of an individual’s issues. He works with the patient on a custom program designed to balance the mind, body and emotions, combining modern innovation with the body's innate ability to heal.  Therapies provided include:

Chiropractic Care

Therapeutic and Rehabilitative Exercises

Nutritional and Lifestyle Counseling

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF)—PEMF helps repair damaged cells, making it among the most advanced injury-repair and pain-elimination technologies available. Patients report that it helps alleviate pain, expedites healing, improves sleep, increases energy, and restores clarity and focus. It is one of few modalities that helps bones heal faster, and patients with osteoporosis have reported improvements.

PEMF is achieved by applying a pulsed electromagnetic field to the body that produces an increase in cellular energy, resulting in a stronger cell. In the same way that physical exercise stimulates our muscles to make them stronger, a pulsed magnetic field stimulates our cells to create more energy, thereby making them “stronger.” PEMF technology has been studied for more than 50 years all around the world, and has been unanimously recognized as being extremely safe and helpful in increasing cellular energy.

Biological Preference Scanning

Biocommunication—This is an exchange of information between a computer and the body; it’s like the computer is asking questions and the body is answering them. The technology sends the body an energetic pulse or signature called a virtual stimulus item (VSI). VSIs are representative of physical items, including nutritional supplements, drugs, body functions, and organs. As each VSI is sent, the body’s response is measured and recorded. The way the body responds is energetic; it’s called galvanic skin response or GSR. The technology Biokare uses, measures complex GSR patterns and determines shifts in energy. These shifts, either negative or positive, identify biological preferences. This information is used to make better decisions and customize recommendations to improve an individual’s health. The interface between the body and the biocommunication software is a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-registered hand cradle. The hand rests on the contacts while the computer sends digital stimulus and gathers the body’s response data. The scan takes a few minutes to complete and is safe for adults and children.

Deep Tissue Laser Therapy—This is a noninvasive technique to help reduce pain and inflammation. The laser is FDA cleared and offers patients an alternative to drugs and surgery. The treatment only takes a few minutes, but the therapeutic effects continue to soothe and heal long after the session. The technology works by flooding the tissues with photons, energizing the damaged cells, and increasing circulation to the painful area. This produces a cascade of healing, thereby reducing, or even eliminating pain. Conditions addressed include:

Low Back Strain

Bulging, Fused or Slipped Discs

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Tennis Elbow

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

Arthritic Conditions

Post-Surgical Recovery

Headaches, Including Migraines

Sports Injuries (Pulled Hamstrings, Calves, Etc.)

Plantar Fasciitis
