Music Battery provides homework help and makes music accessible to underserved youth. Their nonprofit mission is to provide the tools, facilities, support and performance opportunities to achieve students’ personal goals. The Music Battery after-school drumline and strings program, in association with the North Charleston Pops, operate at Hursey Elementary, in North Charleston, but they have also served other schools in Charleston County. Music Battery aims to give the kids something positive to do after school and also teaches discipline, respect and camaraderie.

The program was founded in 2012 by Kris Manning and Braeden Kersner, co-owners of the Black Tie Music Academy, who shared a passion for spreading their love of music to kids that might not otherwise have a chance to partake in a group ensemble. Music Battery is a free program. They perform all over Charleston all year long and donations are always welcome.

Music BatteryThe activity begins with tutoring to complete each student's school homework assignments. Then, they migrate to the practice room to warm up with calisthenics and marching drills. Students are given instruction in rhythm and music and are assigned to a section in the drumline to learn how to care for and play their instrument, as well as the discipline and responsibility required to participate in a drum unit.

Kersner is a former Clark County School District teacher with experience in Title I schools. He knew the challenges the kids faced and wanted to do something to help. Manning has more than 30 years of playing experience in the musical field and 20 years of experience in business. She also has an extensive background in creating events and marketing strategies to benefit nonprofit organizations.

Parents and community members are always welcome at our rehearsals and performances. Kersner explains, “We have seen kids bring failing grades up! We've seen incredibly positive behavior changes. We've had grandparents and parents call us in tears talking about how their child is proud to be part of an organized and disciplined group, and how it helps to bring the best out of them.”
